Conventions In My Opening Sequence
titles
In our opening sequence, we used a credit sequence at the very beginning in order for the audience to know that it is a film and not a trailer. We also included an opening credit sequence because all films have this to tell th audience exactly who was involved in the production of the film
Location
many coming of age films are set around schools, as the films are based around teenagers. in our opening sequence, we had clearly set the scene at a house, school and a subway. obviously houses and schools are used a lot in coming of age films such as Boyhood. in most coming of age films, the location of the film is very clearly shown to the audience to give them an indication of where they are. however, the subway does suit our sub-genre of crime so it goes well.
Characters
in every coming of age film, the main characters are teenagers, however most main characters are shown to be 15-19. in our opening sequence, the 2 characters seen are 16/17.by having teenagers as the main age, it allows the audience to relate to the idea or problem very well. within this comes the characters problems, in our case, a drug dealer. Coming of age films usually focus on a problem within society such as Juno and Teenage pregnancy or persosnal problems such as Boyhood which includes single parenting and abuse
