Challenged Conventions
Dialogue
In our opening sequence, we included very little dialogue. This was mainly due to the fact that our opening was 2 people coming together and only interacting for a very small period of time. From research i did, many coming of age films include quite a bit of talking such as in Kings of summer. We wanted there to be a lack of dialogue as lots of films have it at the beginning, we had a very small sentence about halfway through and then a couple of sentences shared at he end. i feel as if many films have too much talking and conversation at the start.
Font
In many coming of age films, you can get a rough idea of what the film may be about by the font, for example in king of summer, the font used is handwritten in pencil, which suggests the character is based in school. However, the font we used doesn't really suggest to the audience that it will be about crime and reformation. We wanted to use a clear font which was easy to read. I think it works well because the audience cant really guess what the film is going to be about from he font as it gives no hints.
Narrative
Our narrative is very different to most coming of age films, many of the films are to do with relationships, love, school life and many more sub genres but ours is about drugs and prison time. This topic of drugs and prison is never in coming of age films so we have certainly challenged the narrative.
